After announcing the release of Francis Ngannou from UFC at the UFC Vegas 67 post-fight press conference, Dana White announced the fight between Jon Jones and Ciryl Gane for the vacant Heavyweight Championship in the main event of UFC 285.

Ciryl Gane became the interim Heavyweight Champion on August 7th, 2021 at UFC 265 after defeating Derrick Lewis via TKO in the third round. At UFC 270, Gane lost his title to Francis Ngannou. He will get another championship opportunity after losing to Francis Ngannou by a unanimous decision. Gane has an 11-1 professional MMA record.

Jon Jones last competed inside the octagon in February 2020 at UFC 247, where he was able to win by controversial unanimous decision over Dominick Reyes to retain the Light Heavyweight Championship. Jones vacated the UFC Light Heavyweight Title in August 2020. Jones has a 26-1 professional MMA record.

UFC 285 is scheduled to take place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday, March 4.
