The wrestling world erupted with excitement as AJ Styles made his highly anticipated return to WWE on the October 4th episode of SmackDown. Styles addressed the fans, and a few minutes later he was interrupted by Carmelo Hayes.
The Phenomenal One faced the former NXT Champion. Styles suffered an ankle injury during the bout. The referee then called off the match.
Fightful Select reported that Styles had not sustained an injury. They added that it was a planned angle and he was fine.
UPDATED: WWE backstage correspondent Jackie Redmond stated, “Coming out of Smackdown last night, I can confirm that AJ Styles suffered a ‘mid foot ligament sprain’ also known as a Lisfranc injury. AJ will have an MRI later this week to determine the severity of the injury.”
