Gunther made his WWE debut on the January 12th, 2019 episode of WWE NXT UK. Since his debut, he received a huge push and became the longest reigning NXT UK Champion in WWE history by holding the Title for 870 days.
The Ring General arrived on the main roster along with Ludwig Kaiser on the April 8th episode of Friday Night SmackDown last year. Gunther then became the Intercontinental Champion by defeating Ricochet in June. He is currently holding the Intercontinental Title for 236 days.
The 35-year-old star is receiving a huge push under Triple H’s regime. This past Saturday, Gunther entered his first Royal Rumble match as the #1 entry and lasted the final two competitors. The Ring General also became the longest time spent (1 hour and 11 minutes) superstar in a Royal Rumble match. At one point during the Rumble match, Gunther and Brock Lesnar faced off against each other to tease a possible match. However, it looks like the match won’t happen at this year’s WrestleMania.
According to WrestleVotes, WWE pitched a Triple Threat match between Gunther, Sheamus and Drew McIntyre at WrestleMania 39. However, it wasn’t confirmed yet.
“I’m told while not decided 100%, there are plans to feature an Intercontinental Championship 3 way match at WrestleMania: Gunther v Sheamus v Drew McIntyre. There are a number of supporters within creative that not only want the match, but they want it towards the top. TBD.”
