Austin Theory made his WWE main roster debut during the pandemic era. But Theory had a lackluster run on the main roster in 2020. Therefore, the company sent Theory back to NXT to further develop his character.
Theory then arrived on Monday Night RAW as part of the 2021 WWE draft. He was involved in a storyline with Vince McMahon. The Boss handed him a lot of opportunities and as of result Theory received a huge backlash from fans.
Last July, WWE management completely changed after Vince McMahon stepped down from his duties. Triple H then took control of the creative department and Theory’s mega push stalled until last week’s episode of Monday Night RAW.
Last night on RAW, Austin Theory had a match against Dolph Ziggler. Fans noticed Theory had changed a lot following failed MITB cash-in. He did not have a mobile phone in his hand during the entrance and was more serious throughout the match. Theory brutally attacked Ziggler and the referee stopped the match.
Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer noted that WWE has dropped Austin Theory’s selfie gimmick. The company is trying to make him more serious and has planned a big storyline with Seth Rollins for the United States Championship.
“Yeah, yeah, the show is all about making Austin Theory dump in the selfie thing which quite frankly, if you’re gonna make him a top guy, you needed to dump it. That was very much the second-match guy gimmick anyway. So they’re dumping that and trying to get him to be more of a vicious guy and put him in there. He lost to Seth last week, but they’re gonna go with the big Seth Rollins and Austin Theory feud, it looks like. Maybe even on the pay-per-view.”
