Sting made his AEW debut on the December 2nd, 2020 episode of AEW Dynamite: Winter is Coming. The Icon competed in AEW for the first time at Revolution pay-per-view in 2021, where he and Darby Allin defeated Brian Cage and Ricky Starks.
Two weeks ago, Sting announced that he would be retiring from in-ring competition at AEW Revolution next year. Last week, AEW President Tony Khan gave a special gift after Sting announced the retirement date. The gift was the WWE Hall of Famer and Sting’s longtime friend, Ric Flair making his AEW debut.
In an interview with Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, Sting stated that AEW reminds him of WCW. The Icon also stated that he is grateful for the opportunity given to him by Tony Khan.
“Tony Khan called me and asked me to go out in style, I liked that idea. I couldn’t say no. The AEW brand reminds me so much of the WCW brand. Tony allowed me to come back and have some fun, and I’m so grateful for that. It’s been a lot of fun.”
Sting also stated in the interview that he had planned to retire in December before Ric Flair’s arrival.
