Last night, IMPACT Wrestling held Bound For Glory at the Cicero Stadium in Chicago, Illinois. Alex Shelley retained the IMPACT World Championship by defeating Josh Alexander in the main event of the show.
After the match, IMPACT aired a vignette and revealed that they will change their name to TNA Wrestling effective from January 13th at Hard To Kill pay-per-view.
PWInsider reported that IMPACT was supposed to make that announcement at Slammiversary before being pushed back to Bound For Glory. The officials made the final decision on the name change three weeks ago.
PWInsider also revealed the reasons for IMPACT changing its name. One reason is “it would unite the fragmented history of the promotion.” The promotion’s name has been changed a few times within the past two decades. First, they introduced the promotion as TNA, then Global Force Wrestling, and finally Impact Wrestling.
Another reason is International partners preferred TNA over IMPACT Wrestling. Earlier this year, long-term fans voted they liked the old name. A few years ago, the company had a plan to revive TNA as a separate TV series. However, the pandemic stalled those plans.
PWInsider also noted that “There will be new TNA Championship belts rolled out with the current titleholders using those belts instead. The new belts have already been crafted and produced.” The new titles will be introduced in January. PWInsider added that the six-sided ring won’t bring back.
