Three years ago, Roman Reigns won the Universal Championship by defeating Braun Strowman and Fiend in a Triple Threat match at Payback premium live event.
Last year, Reigns defeated Brock Lesnar in a Winner Takes All Title Unification match to become the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion at WrestleMania 38. Reigns defeated almost every top star on the main roster in his title reign.
The Tribal Chief retained his Undisputed WWE Universal Championship by defeating Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 39. That win made huge controversy on social media. Many fans expected Rhodes’ victory.
As of now, Roman Reigns is yet to have a strong opponent for the upcoming premium live events. Dave Meltzer reported that Reigns isn’t scheduled to compete at Backlash PLE which disappointed a lot of fans.
On the Kurt Angle Show, WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle stated that Roman Reigns’ title reign is too long. Angle reminded this isn’t the territory era anymore. He further noted that fans are losing interest because WWE didn’t build new superstars.
“I’m not going to beat up on Roman Reigns because he is the man. He deserves to be, But we’re in a time now where if you’re a champion for three years, that’s a little long. It’s just too long because we’re not in territories anymore. When you were in territories, you weren’t on TV every week so fans had to come see you at the arenas. You would only be in that city one day a week. So they only saw wrestling one day a week back then when they were champion for six, eight years.
Now Roman Reigns has gone on, you know, it looks like he’s gonna hold the title for another few years. The thing is, he’s on TV every week, sometimes twice a week, and then a pay-per-view every month. It’s just a lot. I don’t believe the ratings are gonna go down, but I do believe some people are going to lose interest because they’re not making other wrestlers. Roman has an opportunity to make a wrestler. He could have made Cody into a megastar, which Cody is already a star, but he would have been a megastar if he would have won at WrestleMania. That’s just my opinion.”
