Islam Makhachev was expected to defend his UFC Lightweight Championship against No. 1 contender Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 308 in October. However, Makhachev recently stated that he is dealing with a hand injury.
In an interview with Helen Yee Sports, Islam Makhachev’s coach Javier Mendez said that he won’t be able to start training until later this year.
“He’s got a ligament injury. He’s getting consultations from different doctors, and we’ll see what they say. He’s not going to be able to train for a fight probably late December November, or maybe January… depends on what the UFC and them can come up with, but he’s definitely not going to be ready to fight in October like people are hoping.”
Makhachev was spotted wearing a wrist brace during a Q&A ahead of this Saturday’s UFC Fight Night in Abu Dhabi. The UFC Lightweight Champion stated he will have to wear the brace for 10 days, and the doctors will let him know what to do next.
“Next 10 days I have to wear this thing and doctor will make decision.”
