Jon Jones faced Matt Hamill at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale in 2009. Jones lost the fight after delivering 12-6 elbows several times at 4:14 in the first round. The downward elbow strikes were illegal at the time.
On July 23rd, the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports Committee unanimously voted to lift the ban on 12-6 elbows. The rule change will be effective from Friday, November 1st.
UFC Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones stated on Instagram that he wants to get rid of his MMA loss. Jones stated, “Undefeated then, undefeated now.. @danawhite we gotta get that loss out of the history books.”
During the UFC 304 post-fight press conference, Dana White was asked if he would be eager to see Jon Jones’ loss overturned since the 12-6 elbow ban lifts in November.
“I’ve been trying to do that since it happened. I think I wanted it more than he did. So, it hasn’t worked out too well, though. I’ve been fighting for that for a long time. We had an incompetent referee… A guy who, we can all agree now, maybe I sounded like an a–hole back in the day, but now we can all look back and a hundred percent say that the guy was completely incompetent. At a time when Nevada State Athletic Commission was at its weakest, the guy who was running it was a zero. Mazzagatti should’ve never been in there, and the list goes on and on… and that [disqualification loss of Jon Jones] should’ve been and should be overturned. I’ve been fighting for it for years.”
