In an interview with ESPN, CM Punk discussed a lot of things about his time in AEW last year. Punk said that he suffered a torn left triceps tendon completely off the bone in the match against Jon Moxley at All Out. Punk had undergone surgery and then had a lengthy rehabilitation process.
Punk then talked about what happened between him and then-AEW World Champion Adam Page. Last year, Punk and Page had a promo segment on the May 25th episode of AEW Dynamite. Punk said that he and Page discussed what they would say on air. However, Punk said that “Page strayed from what they had agreed on.” Punk said that Adam Page thinks he was the reason for Colt Cabana’s absence. CM Punk then clarified to Page that there’s no connection between him and Cabana’s absence. Punk then told ESPN he has no relationship with Colt Cabana and he hadn’t told Tony Khan to fire the former ROH Champion but The Elite (Kenny Omega & Young Bucks) believed he did that.
CM Punk also gave his thought on the match against Adam Page for the AEW World Championship at Double or Nothing last year.
“And I proceed to have what I think is a garbage match because I’m trying to protect myself on stuff instead of actually just working and trying to put on the best performance I can,” Punk said. “I’m keeping an eye out. He chopped me in the mouth one time, and I’m just like, ‘OK, did you do that on purpose?’ You chip my tooth, and I’m like, ‘All right, should I give him a receipt?’ It changes the dynamic. It poisoned everything for me, and it made it all really, really ugly, and that was what set all of this off, and here we are over a year later and ain’t s— been done about it.”
CM Punk said that he regrets what happened at the All Out media scrum and he apologized to AEW President Tony Khan. According to Punk, he and Khan are now on good terms.
CM Punk talked about the infamous All Out backstage fight.
“I don’t think what happened was a big deal…” Punk said. “This has happened in the last 10 months in hockey, in basketball, in baseball, in just about every sport. And it’s covered and it’s gone the next day. I think because I have injured my tricep and I’ve been out for so long, I think it has been exacerbated. I think it’s been exacerbated by people spreading lies about the whole thing. And when, in reality, my attitude is, well, s— happens.”
CM Punk said that he didn’t contact Kenny Omega and Young Bucks after the backstage fight last September. Punk said that the lawyers of The Elite prevent him from contacting Omega and Bucks. Punk said that he was labeled as a bad guy in wrestling media. According to Punk, the reality is he’s just defending himself.
CM Punk is scheduled to make his return this Saturday on AEW Collision. In the main event, Punk will team up with FTR (Cash Wheeler and Dax Harwood) to face Samoa Joe, Jay White, and Juice Robinson in a Six-Man Tag Team match.
