This past Friday, Rey Mysterio faced Santos Escobar in the finals of the United States Championship Invitational. Escobar performed a Suicide Dive on Rey during the match. The referee then stopped the match after a medical person checked on Rey Mysterio.
In replay footage, it was seen to the fans that Rey’s head was hit on the floor while falling backward. However, it wasn’t the reason for calling off the match.
Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer stated that Rey Mysterio was “knocked silly” due to a move by Escobar before the dive. Meltzer also noted that Rey was dizzy after that move. However, WWE Hall of Famer is fine.
“So, he’s fine. He did the match with Santos Escobar. I was told it was a move by Santos that knocked Rey silly, but it was not the dive. The dive was the excuse to call the match off. They had already decided to call the match, and the dive was an out they used to call off the match…
They stopped the match before the commercial break and everything like that. But when they found out that he had already been dizzy before, he was like selling a way to stop the match. He was not actually knocked out there, but he was dizzy before that. So that’s what I was told about how it went down.”
Santos Escobar is scheduled to face Austin Theory for the United States Championship on the August 11th episode of SmackDown. Escobar posted the match graphic on Instagram to promote the bout. Rey Mysterio issued the following comment to encourage his protégé.
Let’s FKN Go!!! A ganar!!👊🏼🇲🇽👊🏼
