This past Friday on SmackDown, WWE began the SmackDown World Cup tournament and announced the winner would receive an Intercontinental Championship match against Gunther. Braun Strowman and Santos Escobar advanced to the semi-final after winning their first-round matches.
Eight WWE superstars are participating in the tournament to represent different countries. Initially, WWE planned to add Rey Mysterio to the tournament.
However, Wrestling Observer Newsletter has reported that Mysterio was pulled from the tournament after he suffered a foot/ankle injury. The company then added the RAW superstar Mustafa Ali as Mysterio’s replacement.
Ringside News has reported that Rey Mysterio was spotted backstage wearing a walking boot on this past SmackDown. They also noted that it’s short term injury and nothing serious.
“We’ve had some questions about Rey Mysterio and his current status.
We can confirm that Mysterio was backstage in a walking boot. So he has a short term injury.”
